Untar is a wrapper application for Mac OS X which can uncompress and extract files from .7z, .tar, .tar.gz, .tgz, .tar.z, .z, .gz, .svgz .Z, .tar.Z, .taz, .tar.bz, .tar.bz2, .tbz, .tbz2, .bz, .bz2, .rar, and .zip file formats. Source code is included, available under the GNU Public License.

As of February 2009, Edenwaith will no longer actively develop Untar. In our efforts to focus on current and future projects, Untar has been discontinued. We recommend that users switch to Untar's sister application GUI Tar, which provides all of Untar's capabilities with the addition of being able to compress and archive files. Since Untar is released under the GNU Public License, its source code will still be freely available for others to use.

I dropped a 6.5 MB .tar file onto Untar, and nothing happened. Sigh.

Thanks a million! This is VERY handy when downloading server backups during a migration from one host to another.

Faster is one thing - additional it´s a real peace of software because i´ve just unpacked a 3,5GB .tgz without any error!
Stuffit Expander 5.5/Os 9 couldn´t and the
OS X - version did with errors.
So - if you need to have professional tools to archive/pack and unpack take
FreeTar and Untar. Both free of course.
